Subject: Radio's Top 5
The previous show was the winner but there are some must-hears this night as well.
First Set. The acoustic sets on this run are consistently great but Brent and Jer and Bobby are all just on for both Race is On & Monkey. The last minute of To Lay is best, with Brent. Bird Song is great but Dire Wolf is probably the best version of the tour.
Second Set. Half-Step is perfect; the 2nd solo is magic, Brent is good - it's just x factor. So is the seg into the stellar Franklin's. On Dead Set they chopped Jer's solos. There are four edits, one pointless. On the rolfe-milller they are: 0:54>1:22; 3:00>3:26; 4:21>5:15; 6:46>6:56. On the official release these are approximately: @0:54 (solo shortened 28sec); @2:32 (solo shortened 26sec); @3:26 (entire solo cut); @4:59 (solo shortened by just 2 bars). The sequence from Uncle to Minglewood ("island girls") is hot (High Time being allowably rote). Looks Like Rain is a perfect rendition. Garcia roars, takes it into potent Deal.
Third Set. A bit lifeless at the top - Lost is an odd choice as a bonus cut (compare to, say 5/16). Saint has a dramatic tempo change at the bridge but is an otherwise average version. They take off again at Uncle John's in a tight, yet wandering version, with a helluva segue out that foregoes the often anti-climactic ending. It's a complete group mind and check how excited it makes the drummers. Playin' is spry and well-greased, very slowly breaking down into a nice Phil-bomb section. Drums is a big one by '80 standards (not so for Space), after which they bail on a pedestrian The Other One, not sparking again until the last minute of Black Peter. The finish leaves 'em happy with back-to-back tight smokers. A nearly 3hr show.
1st Set: B
2nd Set: A-
3rd Set: C+
Overall = 4 stars
Highlights:
The Race is On - all on
Monkey and the Engineer - one of tour's best
Dire Wolf - one of era's best
Mississippi Half-Step - 2nd solo is magic; ace version
Franklin's Tower - in all it's glory
Me and My Uncle
Looks Like Rain - dynamic version
Uncle John's Band - tight yet wandering
Playing in the Band - spry and well-greased
One More Saturday Night - tight
U.S. Blues - plenty of juice left
SOURCES: On the morrone.friend.116769 you can hear the bongos and Bobby better but not Phil or Jer and there's less presence. The rolfe.miller.93804 is best. There's a tad more hall echo but it's much fuller. However it runs fast and needs -1% pitch correction. The wiley has no freq range. Five songs and part of another have been officially released. To Lay Me Down is on Reckoning. Heaven Help the Fool is on the bonus disc. Part of Franklin's is on Dead Set. High Time is on that bonus disc. Lost>Saint are bonus tracks on Go to Heaven.

In my year's long quest to listen to every recorded show, I was really looking forward to this run of shows. Reckoning and Dead Set were in the sweet spot of my conversion and while I have developed an appreciation for all of the eras and incarnations, this is at my core. Sadly, and I'm a big advocate for viewing quality through the eyes of circumstance, these recordings are just plain rough. The unfriendly taping atmosphere around producing two albums was obviously successful, to the historical record's detriment.
C'mon boys, let these shows out of the vault. It was a brilliant era and we deserve to hear it, just like we deserved to hear the entire Europe '72 tour.
